about

A new album from the Growling Gecko label by robIN. A 2nd thudding, thumping, groaning and often achingly beautiful remix album of classical music in a new electronic music genre I have named "clACIDal house"

credits

released January 13, 2018

I started my musical life trying to work out Led Zeppelin riffs in the 60's on an old nylon string guitar and ultimately morphing into a blues rock guitarist. In the early 80's, I enrolled at the Conservatorium of Music at WAAPA ( the nationally regarded performing arts training college based in Perth Western Australia) to study classical guitar and this is where my appreciation of classical music was born.
Whilst I was producing Allemande, I was thinking about what my next project might be and it occurred to me that there were some fantastic opportunities amongst the wealth of pieces within the classical music world that should work really well remixed in the EDM genre. I have chosen pieces that are favourites of mine and others that I felt would work well. There is also an interesting mashup!
I could not have completed this album without the assistance of The Petrucci Music Library and all the amazing people who have contributed their great arrangements that I have used in some cases. These tracks are released under the same Creative Commons license terms. Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-SA 4.0)
So I hope you enjoy this music and that maybe it opens up your ears and heart to a genre of music you may never have thought you might ever listen too!
If you did enjoy what you have heard, then you might be interested to know which pieces of classical music they are based on and maybe even have a listen to the original?

Track 1: Rondo - The 2nd album starts out with the oh so catchy 2nd movement of 10 from the incidental music Henry Purcell wrote for a revival, in the summer of 1695, of "The Moor's Revenge", a 1676 play by Aphra Behn.

Track 2: Sheep - JS Bach's simply gorgeous Sheep May Safely Graze from the Cantata BWV 208 in my attempt at a little tropical house.

Track 3: Sarabande - Another simply ravishing piece by George Frederick Handel from his Suite in D minor, HWV 437.

Track 4: Wander - The only mashup on this album featuring the Promenade from Modest Mussorgky's grand work Pictures at an Exhibition before morphing in to one of my all time favourite and most stirringly patriotic melodies Edward Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance March No: 1 to which the following lyrics by A. C. Benson were set. Do feel free to sing out aloud lustily!
"Land of Hope and Glory, Mother of the Free,
How shall we extol thee, who are born of thee?
Wider still and wider shall thy bounds be set;
God, who made thee mighty, make thee mightier yet,
God, who made thee mighty, make thee mightier yet."

Track 5: The Folly - There are not many themes that have been used by more composers than La Folia at more than 150 apparently. I have always loved this one created by Arcangelo Corelli in his Violin Sonata in D minor, Op.5 No.12. Such a great chord progression.
Dm (i) A7 (V7) Dm (i) C (VII) F (III) C (VII) Dm (i) A7 (V7)
Dm (i) A7 (V7) Dm (i) C (VII) F (III) C (VII) Dm (i) A7 (V7) Dm (i)

Track 6: G String - Ok I'll admit it. J S Bach is my favourite composer. Here is the achingly beautiful 2nd movement from orchestral Suite No. 3 in D major, BWV 1068 commonly known as the Air on a G String.

Track 7: Leyenda - I used to play this piece on guitar and I thought it might work rather well in this format and so it does. The 5th movement Asturias (Leyenda) from Isaac Albeniz's Suite Española No.1, Op.47.

about

robIN Denmark, Australia

I first picked up the guitar at 15 in the late 60's to learn Led Zeppelin riffs.
In 2008, after 40 years of playing and teaching the guitar, I switched to the piano and have never looked back.
Piano has greatly assisted my composition and improvisation skills and is brilliantly useful in the production process.
